Decking - Overview

Hardwood timbers have been New Zealand’s superior deck cladding for more than 30 years. The benefits of a durable, hardwearing hardwood decking are well known but sustainability of supply and the legality of sources have been issues. Herman Pacific has worked hard to source hardwood decking and landscape timber species suited to New Zealand’s changeable climate and that still meet our expectations for eventual certified sustainable supply and legality of source. Herman Pacific is working with our suppliers of Caribbean sourced timbers Greenheart (Chlorocardium rodiei formerly mis-classified as Ocotea rodiei) and Purpleheart (Peltogyne spp.) timbers to prove legality and sustainability through 3rd party certification.

Greenheart is rated 'Very durable' in AS 5604-2003 Timber – Natural Durability Ratings, for a probable in-ground life expectancy of greater than 25 years, and greater than 40 years for above-ground applications. The timber is historically renowned for its weight, strength, durability and hardwearing properties. The Antarctic explorers, Roald Amundsen and Ernest Shackleton both chose to clad the hulls of their famous ships, Fram and Endurance, with Greenheart.

Purpleheart is rated 'Durable' in AS 5604-2003 Timber – Natural Durability Ratings, for a probable in-ground life expectancy of 15 - 25 years, and 15 - 40 years for above-ground applications. The timber is historically known renowned for its hardwearing properties (Dry Janka rating of 11) beautiful, distinctive colour and figure.

Standard Greenheart and Purpleheart decking and boardwalk profile dimensions are 145 x 21 (six grooves on one face), 145 x 25 (six grooves on one face) and 90 x 19 (14 ribs on one face)
